«Subject: ELETAEN asks you to support a 35% renewable energy target

Dear ................,

I am writing to you on behalf of the Hellenic Wind Energy Association, HWEA

On 17 January you will vote on the European Parliament's position on the Energy Union Governance Regulation and Renewable Energy Directive.

This vote will impact jobs and growth across the Europe including Greece. And with that the size of our business and our ability to deliver economic benefits to local communities and national governments.

The wind industry in Europe employs 263,000 people and contributed €36bn to EU GDP last year. It generated €8bn of exports outside of Europe. This benefits other sectors too. Every €1,000 of turnover in the wind industry generates €250 of activity in sectors such as metals, chemicals, electrical equipment and machinery, construction and engineering.

But there is no guarantee this will be maintained. The wind industry's contribution to the European economy is at risk. Job growth in the industry has stalled in the last five years as many countries have become less ambitious on renewables. Net exports of wind equipment are down 30% due to intense competition from emerging economies.

A strong European home market for new investments in wind energy is vital to sustain the economic benefits the sector brings. And to ensure Europe remains a technology leader in the area and keeps its strong manufacturing base.

For that it is vital that the European Parliament endorses a 2030 renewable energy target of 35% (Amendments 9, 109 in ITRE committee's report on the Renewables Directive).

Wind Energy is an industry that lives on long-term investments and puts its money where we see ambitious and stable regulation. The industry wants to continue investing in Europe. A 35% renewable energy target is urgently needed to give a strong policy signal that Europe wants to sustain its achievements in with sector and keep the economic benefits of wind at home.

With the right policy ambition, wind could be 30% of Europe's electricity by 2030. With the steadily falling costs of wind energy this is feasible and affordable.

Maintaining investments and installations at the current level requires a renewable energy target of 35%. The costs of sticking with the Commission's original proposed target of 27% are €92bn of missed investments and 132,000 wind energy jobs not created.

To support the future of our business and Europe's strong wind energy manufacturing base we ask you to vote for a 35% renewable energy target next week».
